Semester 2 Round-Up

09 / 04 / 19

Before I begin I would like to say, as always, the committee have been blown away by the support we have received from our members. At both careers and social events, you have turned out in your masses which we are all extremely grateful for! This semester, the committee have worked tirelessly to provide both memorable and useful events for all of you!

Careers Events

The careers team kick-started the semester with “Get that Traineeship” with Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF). Our members were given a talk by Peter Cunningham and Mary Napier from HSF about the application process for Vacation Schemes and Traineeships at HSF.

The talk was followed by a networking opportunity at our sponsor pub, The Beer Kitchen, allowing our members to ask any questions they had about life at HSF and the application process. DULS are looking forward to working with HSF again in the future!

The second careers event which we hosted was the Criminal Advocacy event at Dundee Sheriff Court. The event allowed students from all year groups to attend the court and gain an insight on various experiences as criminal lawyers. Jim Laverty helped DULS organise the event and sourced speakers to describe their career in either Prosecution or Defence. The speakers were Stuart Hamilton, Vicki Bell and Marie Irvine.

The members were then split into two groups of Prosecution and Defence to discuss how to question a witness. Four lucky attendees were able to then put this new skill into practice and question a witness (in our case, Jim Laverty and Stuart Hamilton). The event was really well received by our members and will hopefully appear in a similar format next year!

Social Events

We started this semester with a family reunion in the form of Gaudie Revenge, however, the main focus of this semester was our annual Law Ball! The ball was sponsored by Addleshaw Goddard LLP and this year, DULS spent 2 nights at Dunkeld House Hotel.

On the first night, we took a step back in time to the 70s a danced the night away to some classic 70s music. On the Saturday morning our members enjoyed a hot buffet breakfast in the hotel and were able to enjoy some of the hotel facilities such as the pool, spa and gym. The second night we had our traditional ball, followed by awards and a ceilidh! The event was perfectly organised by our social team, Shannon and Liam, and is truly a weekend we will all remember forever. DULS were honoured to have been nominated for an LCN Award for the Law Ball. Sadly, we did not win. However, being the only Scottish University in attendance was a huge achievement and a credit to the hard work of our social team.

In addition to the success of this semester’s social events, one of our events from semester 1 has been nominated for a DUSA Award! Our joint Shrek quiz with DUBS has been nominated for Best RAG Event. The awards are held at the beginning of May so fingers crossed we do well!

Finally, I would like to say good luck to the incoming committee and a massive thank you to the committee from this year for all of your hard work! It has been a pleasure being a part of DULS the past two years and I cannot wait to see what the new committee brings and how they continue the success of DULS!

Much Love (for the final time😢),

Sarah xo
