Semester 1 Social Round-Up

11 / 11 / 18

Last week we ran our charity pub quiz, rounding off a successful first semester of social events. After the success of last year’s pub quiz, we decided once again to organise it alongside Dundee University Business Society (DUBS). Firstly, we had to agree on a charity to raise money for, unanimously choosing Dundee FoodBank. The reason we chose this charity was that it seemed fitting to give something back to the community we all call home for at least 4 years. Dundee FoodBank was set up in 2012 as under the Trussell Trust. Part of a network of 428 foodbanks, Dundee FoodBank works to tackle food poverty and hunger in local communities across the UK. We also chose this charity as it is the DUSA RAG charity.

We decided to go with a “Shrek Theme” quiz due to its popularity. The family favourite was clearly the correct choice as will managed to fill the venue, DUSA AirBar, within 20 minutes. We took donations for entry, and collected food donations. DULS and DUBS also decided to run a raffle to raise more funds. This could not be done without the generosity of local businesses that donated raffle prizes. A huge thank you to:

  • Taypark House Hotel
  • Nandos Dundee
  • Tailend Dundee
  • Scran Fitness Food
  • Dr Noodle
  • The Beer Kitchen Dundee
  • Spex Pistols
  • Five Guys Dundee
  • Dundee Stars Ice Hockey
  • Padrino Pizza
  • Club Tropicana
  • DUSA AirBar

The Pub quiz and raffle raised an outstanding £402.65! We were completely blown away by everyone’s generosity as we never expected to raise as much as that. DULS and DUBS would like to thank all the students who came along to support this much needed cause.

This semester has been hugely enjoyable. It has been a smooth transition from being the Social Media convenor of DULS (17/18) to Social Vice President, mainly due to the fantastic support from the rest of the committee. There is a lot of pressure that comes with the position mainly due to the popularity of the events. The social events are an essential aspect of the society, supporting the first years integration into the law school as well as university life itself.

Next semester will start off with our charity bingo event and law family reunion in early January. March then sees the return of our highly anticipated Law Ball event, sponsored by Addleshaw Goddard. The two night event will be held at Dunkeld House Hotel, Perthshire, catering for 140 students over the weekend. Our first night is Disco Fever theme, bringing a more relaxed atmosphere. The second night will be a night filled with “glitz and glam”, with the night beginning with a drinks reception and Scottish piper, followed by a three-course meal and a night of fun!

So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed having the responsibilities that have come with the role. With being Social VP, I now have a very full timetable. This has helped me learn how to organise my time well and ensure I meet deadlines more so than before. I have also been able to meet loads of wonderful people, both with and out with the law school. The careers events organised by Careers Vice President, Lauren Galloway, have shown me the multitude of pathways that could follow my degree. Once again, a huge thanks to everyone has come along to the events! I am excited to see what next semester has in store for DULS.
